Yes, we had Linsanity last season, and though it was undeniably fun, it was brief and illusory. The Knicks' decision not to match the Rockets' offer for Lin made it seem as if the whole thing had never happened at all. So for the last, true, expansive experience of fun as a Knicks fan, you have to go all the way back to 1999, when Marcus Camby and Latrell Sprewell led a spirited run through the Eastern Conference playoffs. "I think I'm falling in love," said Doc Rivers, now the Celtics coach, then an announcer, as he watched Camby pluck another offensive rebound from the air and thunderously slam it back home.
Yes, the Knicks were trounced 4-1 by the San Antonio Spurs in the N.B.A. finals, but there was no bitterness in this defeat. Without their injured star Patrick Ewing, they had already defied all reasonable expectations. The team they have this year is basically a 1999 retread: Camby, now 38, has returned, and they've got Rasheed Wallace and Jason Kidd, who were both in their prime back then. Throw in Kurt Thomas and a 15-year-old Carmelo Anthony at the two guard, and who knows, maybe that team could've upset San Antonio.
As for those actual 1999 Knicks, the fun did not last long. In 2001, Eric Konigsberg wrote a memorable story about the Knicks for this magazine. Camby plays a starring role in the story — but more for his brawling skills than soaring dunks. By that point, the Ewing era was officially over, Coach Jeff van Gundy was running out of gas, and the malaise that continues to this day had set in. The Knicks, Konigsberg noted, had become a team of "several supremely able players who seem to cancel each other out." Which could be mistaken for a preview of this year's team.
