Why is this day different from all other days? Duh. It's the One-Page Magazine's one-year anniversary!
Exactly one year ago, the One-Page Magazine debuted in The New York Times Magazine to mixed reviews. Actually, they weren't so mixed. Lots of people complained about the type size, the narrow columns and what might be called a lack of seriousness. Others weren't so nice. Nevertheless, we stuck with the formula of trying to create a full magazine — cover story, columns, front-of-book marginalia, reported feature stories, servicey interviews with famous people, food stories, book reviews — on one page. A year later, readers have really come around. We receive Meh List suggestions on Twitter. We've published fiction by one of the country's premier novelists. One contributor reports that even her grandmother now enjoys the page.
This week, the One-Page Magazine had a special themed issue. In a show of utmost modesty, it did not celebrate its own one-year anniversary, but rather honored today's other significant event, the presidential election. Christopher Buckley, the humorist and novelist, offers an all-purpose election-night speech for either candidate. Douglas Brinkley, the renowned presidential scholar, comments on the Obama administration's "permanent fist bump" with the Latino voters. Mark Leibovich, the magazine's chief national correspondent, warns you about one phrase you'll have to get used to if Mitt Romney wins. And if you want to know what to drink tonight while you watch the returns, Mario Batali has the answer.
As luck would have it, his drink recommendations also work well for toasting the one-year anniversary, which is what I will do tonight.
