This month, The Times of London published the final issue of a monthly science magazine called Eureka, yet another casualty of the poor economy and the growing pressure on print publications. The magazine's editors had an inspired idea of how to say goodbye — an issue devoted to The End of Life as We Know It.
Freed from the concern of possibly alienating readers or advertisers with such negative fare, they delved into their deepest fears — which, though residents of the northeastern United States might object, did not include hurricanes. Rather, editors focused on volcanos, earthquakes, war and viral pandemics. All in all, a pretty bracing brew of nasty ways for us all to go.
The most harrowing information, however, was contained in the Survival Guide section, especially the suggestions for what to eat and drink when all the 7-Elevens in the world have been reduced to rubble. Earthworms, it turns out, are an impressive source of iron, and for protein, your best bet may be a cockroach. You may want to also consider consuming trees, which will be most digestible and tasty if you can get to the soft middle layer of wood called the phloem, which should be cut into thin strips and fried with a bit of fat. Where might that come from? Ants. "Higher in calories than many margarines," the editors usefully note.
Boot leather is another edible of last resort.
As for what to drink, borrow this old aboriginal trick: "Tie a cloth between your ankles and walk across dew-covered grass. Then wring it out over a container."
Finally, there's one piece of advice that is also an irrefutable argument for the necessity of print journalism: "If trapped in a building, crouch under stacks of old newspapers or magazines — paper doesn't compress under the weight of rubble."
