For the past few months, we at The One-Page Magazine have been asking readers to submit suggestions for the Meh List, a weekly roll call of things that are "not hot, not not, just meh." So far, we've received some pretty inspired ideas via the hashtag #mehlist on Twitter: drum solos, French pedicures, Tom's of Maine. Possums.
In the meantime, other readers have requested that we open the meh suggestion box beyond Twitter. Fair enough. Penny Zokaie's suggestion, which made it into the Dec. 2 list, came by e-mail. The other day, my 80-year-old grandmother called to say hello. She also suggested "double dating" for the Meh List. (Expect it to show up in a future edition.) My favorite non-Twitter submission, however, came from Andrea Lenaburg of Chicago, who mailed in a card that said "meh" on the front and contained the following inside:
1. Marc Maron
2. Malbec wine
3. The 100th episode of "The Mentalist"
4. Latest Chanel No. 5 ad campaign
5. 50 degrees that feels like 46 degrees
6. Legible handwriting
Lenaburg — whose handwriting, I should note, is totally legible — strikes a savvy balance of topics (entertainment, fashion, food and drink, weather) and topicality. I don't agree with everything on her list — I'd say Marc Maron qualifies as hot, 50 degrees that feels like 46 degrees qualifies as cold and "The Mentalist" (particularly its 100th episode) is sub-meh — but I appreciate her boldness nonetheless and hope to hear more suggestions from her, and others, soon.
Please keep the mehness coming by Twitter, e-mail, snail mail (620 8th Avenue, 6th Floor, New York, N.Y., 10018) — whatever medium is most comfortable for you. Only my grandma is allowed to submit by phone.
