The Big, Important Chart on The One-Page Magazine allows me to fulfill a pretty basic impulse: measure and rate things. Being a comedian in real life, I especially appreciate the opportunity to arbitrarily assign mathematical meaning to material that does not necessarily warrant it, like the length of Gerard Butler's beard or the heroism of Adam West's Batman versus Christian Bale's.
To come up with ideas, I think about what will be happening by the time we go to print, so I look at coming releases and holidays. But really, the task is mostly about checking in with the zeitgeist, which I can do best by just keeping abreast of headlines, trends and buzz words throughout pop culture. I need to know what people are talking about, or at least thinking about (if not talking about yet).
Essentially the chart is an inside joke — among people, say, who can deduce whether Willard Scott or Ashleigh Banfield is more likely to be a space alien.
