The 6th Floor Blog: Abraham Lincoln Has Never Been So Adorable

For many children in New York, the most significant thing about Abraham Lincoln's birthday is that it grants them a weeklong break from school. (Or, thanks to Sandy, a two-day break.) But for the 21 fourth graders in Tim Jensen's class at the Packer Collegiate Institute in Brooklyn Heights, Lincoln's birthday is something worth celebrating. To culminate a three-week lesson on Lincoln's life, Jensen took his students on a trip last Tuesday, Lincoln's birthday, to Grand Central Station, where they recited the Gettysburg Address to passing commuters and held signs reading "Today is President Lincoln's 204th birthday" and "You may ask President Lincoln a question." Eventually, the group was forced to leave because they didn't have an assembly permit.

"I considered resisting the order," Jensen wrote in an e-mail, "imagining the headline, 'Elementary School Teacher Arrested in Grand Central Station for Allowing His Students to Recite the Gettysburg Address on Lincoln's Birthday.' But I thought better of it."

The photographer Timothy Briner was in Grand Central to work on a project about New York City when he stumbled upon the tiny, bearded boys. Here are some of his photos.
