The 6th Floor Blog: Brazil: The Big Pictures

It was nearly a decade ago that the photographer Massimo Vitali first heard about a "fake lake" in Brazil. "Since nine years ago, I had this thing in my mind, the Piscinão de Ramos," he says. The pools, which are composed of filtered seawater, were built for favela dwellers in Rio de Janeiro who lack access to the city's well-heeled beaches like Ipanema and Copacabana.

Making giant photographs of people at play in water has been something of a specialty for Vitali. But it was December before he was finally able to get his picture of the Piscinão de Ramos.

On this trip, his most recent assignment for the magazine, Vitali worked with a producer, Caio Sivieri de Assis Rocha, and an assistant, Roberta Diegues Rossetto, both of whom are based in Brazil. The three of them created the assorted photographs that appear in this weekend's Voyages Issue. Vitali wanted to capture "real Brazilian people" and not the tourist's vision of the Brazil — what much of the world is likely to see when it tunes in to the World Cup there next summer, and the Olympics in Rio two summers after that.

He staked out a funk festival in the heart of Rio. A fruit market on a Saturday in São Paulo. A shipyard in Angra dos Reis. The Lençóis Maranhenses dunes in the north, which you have to walk an hour to get to. The Vidigal favela in Rio, where it took and hour and a half to drive half a mile.

"Everything in Brazil is difficult," Vitali says — above all, the traffic, four to five hours' worth every day he was there. But because Vitali successfully negotiated the quotidian hassles of the "real" Brazil, we don't have to when his pictures transport us there.
