The essay that accompanies Simon Norfolk's photographs of the northern lights in this past weekend's Voyages issue was written by the Norwegian novelist Karl Ove Knausgaard. A beautiful, meditative piece, it suggests nothing of the controversy that surrounded the publication of Knausgaard's six-volume autobiographical novel in Norway. Lauded by critics as a literary feat (the first volume appeared in English last summer), the book played less well among Knausgaard's own family members. Part fiction, part memoir, "Min Kamp," or "My Struggle" as it is known in English, included not just unflinching descriptions of his father's alcoholism and grandmother's incontinence but also revealing details about his ex- and his current wife. Some took revenge (the ex made a radio documentary); others sued (the uncle succeeded in getting his family members' names changed before publication). As The Guardian noted last March, the question of whether Knausgaard had crossed a line became a national obsession:
Television, radio and newspaper reporters interviewed not just everyone Knausgaard mentioned in the books, but pretty much everyone he had known since early childhood. "Should he have done it?" became a burning question discussed at supermarket checkouts, in cafes, across family dinner-tables. Norwegian companies were obliged to declare 'Knausgaard-free days,' when the subject was banned.
Knausgaard was unable to make peace with everyone (his current wife forgave him; his father's family did not, The Guardian reported), but he expresses no real regrets. "Do you think your literature is worth your uncle, or whoever? Is literature more important than hurting people? You can't argue that. You can't say it. It's impossible. But you can write about yourself and about your father. That's my defense in all this. I did this with a pure heart."
