Talk: What Marcia Gay Harden Knows About Trophy Wives

You're joining Aaron Sorkin's "Newsroom" this season. Because Sorkin is famous for writing long speeches, I wonder if it's a mixed blessing for an actor: meaty parts, but so much dialogue to learn.
When I first got the role, Jeff Daniels said: "I'll give you a little Aaron Sorkin tip: Come to set with your lines down for the rehearsal." I said, "What?" Usually the actor learns them during the day. But as an actress, I have never had a sigh of consternation when I get something complicated. You know how it is when you feel used in a good way. It's like that old song, "keep on using me, 'til you use me up." I just feel grateful.

Your breakout role was playing the mob moll Verna in "Miller's Crossing" in 1990, but a year after that you were still doing catering gigs.
I got "Miller's Crossing" while I was in school, but I went back to catering because I didn't have any money. They had wonderful ads on all the buses, posters of Gabriel Byrne, John Turturro. There was one that was just me. And I stopped the cab, I was like: "Stop, stop. That's me. That's me!" I was catering a "Lifestyles of the Rich and Famous" wedding at the Bronx Zoo. Robin Leach was there. I remember thinking, Why are we doing French service on spaghetti with red tomato sauce?

That is not how stardom is supposed to work.
People have such false perceptions of how stardom really works. After I won the Oscar for "Pollock," some newspaper printed, "She should get a million-dollar bump." My sisters would write me, "You're gonna get this million-dollar bump!" I thought, I'll open the shutters to my hotel, and Scorsese will be on the lawn, and the lawn will be made out of emeralds. I never made less money than right after the Oscar.

In the ABC show "Trophy Wife," out this fall, are you playing the title role?
Oh, don't you only wish. No. The trophy wife must be in her 20s to earn the title "trophy wife." Malin Akerman is the trophy wife. I am the first wife and then Michaela Watkins is the second wife. So I refer to myself as the degree, and Michaela is the award, and Malin is the trophy.

You once said that in Hollywood, 40 is the new 100, but in "Damages," for instance, you were given a very sexy role.
It was the garter scene that did it, right? Just showing the garter postsex with Bill Hurt — that action alone said so much. Maybe I was speaking more for film than for television, because television is a wide world of opportunity for women in their 30s, 40s, 50s, thank God. In any film, there are 10 male roles for 1 female role, especially in the action films. They're heavy with the guys.

In 1996, you married a prop guy named Thaddaeus, whom you met on a film set, which happens to be the name your father and brother share. When you think back to meeting him now, do you think . . . ?
I should have lain down on a couch and talked to Freud maybe?

Well, more, did you think it was fated to be somehow?
At first it made me say, "There is absolutely no way in hell I can date you, because your name is Thaddaeus." And then I thought, Well, the men I've loved the most in my life were Thaddaeus, why not?

After your divorce, you said that you looked at Match.com, but found the experience "heinous."
It's hard if you're a celebrity to do anything like that. The whole idea of writing everything down and then having someone figure out who you're supposed to be with. It just gave me the heebie-jeebies. You'd really have to be committed to it to make it not just a hookup site.

Some actors make it right away, others never make it. You made it, but it took a while. What kept you plugging away?
As a young actor, you have to think that something about you is so special that, as you get off the bus, it will happen. It's the beautiful and horrible vanity of being an actor. So you get off, and you think, Well, I'm here. It's a bit grand.

You make it sound as if all these people come to New York with personality disorders.
Well, we're actors. So I would absolutely agree that we all have a kind of a personality disorder.
