For her article in the magazine last year about a manufacturing community in Alabama with an increasing number of female breadwinners, Hanna Rosin spoke to men and women who were grappling with the change. While a new dynamic was evident throughout the community, every middle-aged couple insisted that the man was still "head of the household."
Younger generations might be viewing these shifting roles differently. Spanish photographer Jon Uriarte, 33, finished shooting a series called "The Men Under the Influence," in 2009, which featured images of men in their girlfriends' clothes. In a blog post yesterday for Feature Shoot, Julia Sabot wrote that Uriarte had noted a difference between his parents' views of gender and his own generation's, and he sought to depict this change and the "confusion the male may be experiencing."
Change is disorienting. But I don't see confusion in these images. The men seem comfortable, even defiant, in their girlfriends' clothes. Marcos wears Lucia's narrow midline skirt and black leather boots with confidence; Matias dangles a flat off his toe much as his partner, Sarah, might. Santi and Guillermo appear to not even be wearing clothing that isn't theirs (save for, perhaps, their shoes).
The men in Rosin's story may have felt isolated by the growing success of women, but those in Uriarte's pictures seem eager to close all kinds of gender gaps. It's as if you can even see the faint outlines of these women in the clothes they normally wear. Their male partners might be willing to take on not only their fashion choices, but also some aspect of their contemporary roles.
