The 6th Floor Blog: Preppy Drinks: The Next Level

I met the novelist Maggie Shipstead during the trip to Nantucket that inspired my latest Drink column. Based on our conversation over dinner one night, I had a hunch that I'd enjoy her debut novel, ''Seating Arrangements.'' I was right: I devoured the novel — set on a fictional New England island, populated by preppies, during a wedding weekend — and naturally it wound up on the reading list accompanying the column. It's a terrific beach read — one with great charm, depth of feeling and beautiful language.

There's plenty of drinking in ''Seating Arrangements.'' By e-mail, I asked Shipstead what drinks she considers preppy classics. ''There are the obvious ones like G. and T.'s and Cape Codders and whatnot," she told me. "I would also put forward Mt. Gay and tonic. For the hardcore, there's the bullshot: cold beef bullion and vodka."

The bullshot makes an appearance in her novel. I'd never before thought of it as a WASPy kind of drink; after all, it was a favorite of my mother's, and she was a Jewish woman born and raised in Brooklyn. It made me shudder a little when she first described it. But as an adult, I came to appreciate its appeal, sort of: How many drinks can be described as meaty? It's exactly the sort of thing about which you might say could put hair on your chest — if that's what you're after. (David Wondrich discusses the drink on Edible Manhattan, and includes a recipe).

With apologies to my late mother, I think I'll stick with my Brighton Beach Breeze. And Shipstead? "My favorite summer drink is beer," she says, "especially a good German wheat beer or a saison." Yeah, those sound pretty close to perfect, too — if not perfectly prep.
