When we created the cover of this Sunday's magazine to accompany Amy Chozick's article — to be published online tomorrow — about Hillary Rodham Clinton's influence on the various people within her political universe, the immediate idea that came to mind was Clinton's face embedded on a planet. . .
. . . similar to the man-in-the-moon image from the 1902 silent film "Le Voyage Dans la Lune."
It just so happened that the illustrator Jesse Lenz visited the office to show us his portfolio a few weeks earlier. His depiction of Donald Trump in Golf Digest was memorable and made us think that Lenz might be the perfect choice to do an illustration for this article.
Lenz and I discussed giving the cover a theatrical feel; his first attempt appears below. It certainly had the humorous element I was looking for, but the land mass making up the hair felt forced to me. It needed to be simplified.
So Lenz then pitched another approach, below. The result was a move in the right direction, but the editors wanted to suggest a greater universe, which could include characters from Hillary's inner circle.
At first we were going to put faces on celestial bodies orbiting around her, but it felt like overkill. Instead, we added other galactic elements, and then Lauren Kern, one of our deputy editors, who was in constant conversation with us about the evolution of the cover, came up with the language (e.g., "The Chelsea Quasar" and "Huma's Dark Matter") that would surround "Planet Hillary."

It has apparently already provided inspiration for those with access to photo-editing software.
