It's not as easy as it once was to hold big underground parties in New York. The city has cracked down in recent years, according to Sari Rubinstein, a founder of Rubulad, which since the mid-'90s has been one of several organizers putting on themed, carnival-like parties with live performances, art installations and cheap booze in various Brooklyn and Queens locations. Some of those spaces are seen here just hours after the last revelers left. Rubinstein, whose most recent event was held in an abandoned Bushwick church, has been raising money through Kickstarter for a permanent space. "There isn't really in place any kind of way for people to do what we do," she says, describing the Rubulad as an "experiential" event, not a bar or social club. "We don't legally exist."
