I had to tell people to stop. After I put out an informal call for San Francisco bar recommendations for this month's Drink column, I simply couldn't visit the dozens of bars that people suggested. I'm sure I had to omit some of your favorites — chime in and let me know what those are — but 20 bars in four days was all I could manage. This time.
And that's not only because San Francisco has such an abundance of terrific, distinctive bars of many kinds; it's also because some of them are so inviting they make you want to linger. So it was the afternoon I wandered into Vesuvio Cafe. Nestled on a corner just across Jack Kerouac Alley from City Lights, the celebrated bookshop co-founded by the poet Lawrence Ferlinghetti, Vesuvio is a model of Beat-era bohemian charm. (Yes, Kerouac drank there, and so did Neal Cassady.)
As soon as I claimed a bar stool, the thing I love most about leisurely afternoons in bars started right up: lively conversation among strangers. The guys to my left — one a local, one a visitor — were happy to tell me all about their favorite bars. The guy to my right, fresh from a job interview, had plenty to say about contemporary fiction.
And behind the bar, Janet Clyde, one of Vesuvio's owners, was the perfect hostess: joining the conversation, guiding me to another favorite local saloon — and sharing the recipe for the cafe's signature drink, the Bohemian Coffee. It looks perfectly innocent, just like a coffee — but it has a kick. A perfect pick-me-up for a cool, foggy evening by the bay.

Two parts Disaronno Originale
One part brandy
Strong coffee to fillGarnish with a lemon twist.
